Kigali, 19 December 2017 – Yesterday, President Paul Kagame delivered the State of the Nation Address. Overall, the country has grown stronger of the last year.
Below are some of the major highlights from the address:
On the economic front, US $ 1.5 billion new investment and infrastructure deals were registered. These include the new international airport under construction in Bugesera District.
On agriculture, after a period of slow growth, agriculture production grew by eight per cent this year. This is despite challenges like army worms and drought in different parts of the country.
Conference tourism is bearing fruits. Over the last one year, Rwanda hosted 169 international meetings, which brought tens of thousands of customers to Rwandan hotels, restaurants, and Rwanda’s national career – RwandAir.
The ‘Made in Rwanda’ strategy is boosting production. Compared to the same period last year, exports have increased by 50%, while imports have declined by 3%. As a result, the national trade deficit fell by more than 20%.
Mineral exports now exceed the value of all other exports combined. This is a result of the efforts invested in value addition and new exploration.
More than 8,000 new manufacturing jobs were registered this year.
